Why Gen Z? Gen Zs are different and are, or will soon, join the workforce. Gen Zs have a unique perspective on careers and how to define success in life and at the workplace. Entire industries and businesses are set to rise and fall in the wake of Gen Z. Yet few industries or organizations seem to be ready for it. The workshop was an opportunity for industry representatives, public officials, education experts and youths to share their views on how to adapt the workplace to welcome the future workforce.
The event featured a keynote address by 19-year old social entrepreneur and social change activist: Jenk Oz, Founder and CEO of Thred Media, who inspired the audience with his insights on how to be ready for the new employment paradigm. He shared a few tips with the youths present on how to go about branding themselves, and shared with employers what Gen Z’s want at the workplace.
This set the stage for the ensuing vibrant panel discussion with Gen Z’s, the Foundation for Human Resources Development (FHRD) and Aġenzija Żgħażagħ. Zach Ciappara, founder and CEO of FreeHour, Larissa Vella, economic analyst at the National Skills Council and student activist Chayenne Riolo, Vice Chair of the European Democratic Students shared their personal experiences, values and concerns, whilst Simon Schembri of Aġenzija Żgħażagħ completed the picture on Gen Z with insights from their research and experiences with working with youths. FHRD President Noel Debono reflected on the trends and challenges that enterprises are experiencing to attract and retain Gen Z talent.
Participants were able to engage in thought-provoking discussions, exploring current themes such as the evolving world of work, Gen Z’s core values and attitudes against the expectations from employers, with the aim of fostering mutual understanding. The workshop touched upon how organizations can align their strategies with Gen Z’s aspirations, focusing on upskilling, professional development, and creating a workplace culture that resonates with Gen Z’s.
Artist and graphic recorder, Blanche Ellis captured the main themes and the flow of emerging ideas on visuals, which shall be shared through the NSC’s social media, to be reflected upon, and carry ideas and conversations forward.
