Malta returns as a Member of WorldSkills Europe through the National Skills Council

Malta has officially returned as a Member of WorldSkills Europe, marking an important step in strengthening the country’s participation in European cooperation on skills, vocational excellence, and workforce development.

Through this membership, Malta joins a wider network of European countries working together to promote excellence in skills development, vocational education and training, lifelong learning, and talent development. The membership was formally ratified during the WorldSkills Europe General Assembly 2026 held in Helsinki, Finland.

The initiative is being driven through the National Skills Council (NSC), which will serve as Malta’s official representative within WorldSkills Europe and support future participation in European initiatives, partnerships, exchanges of good practice, and skills-related opportunities.

What is WorldSkills Europe?

WorldSkills Europe is a platform that brings together countries from across Europe to strengthen skills systems, promote vocational excellence, and celebrate talent through cooperation, knowledge exchange, and international skills competitions. The main objectives include demonstrating the critical role vocational and technical pathways play within competitive, resilient, and future-oriented economies.

Across Europe, EuroSkills is the skills competition recognised as a platform that showcases the highest standards of technical expertise, innovation, precision, and professionalism. It is often described as the “Olympics of Skills”, since the best young talent is celebrated in this high-stakes competition.

The organisation supports collaboration between countries on emerging workforce needs, vocational education, skills development, and the promotion of excellence across a wide range of professions and sectors.

What does this mean for Malta?

As Malta prepares for future participation within the WorldSkills Europe framework, this membership opens new opportunities for collaboration, benchmarking, international exposure, and the development of high-performing skills ecosystems that place learners, talent, and excellence at their core.

It also opens pathways for participation in future skills initiatives and competitions that showcase vocational excellence while encouraging skills development among young people and professionals.

For Malta, this represents an opportunity to further strengthen the visibility and value of skills, lifelong learning, and workforce readiness within a rapidly evolving labour market.

The role of the National Skills Council

Through its role as Malta’s official representative within WorldSkills Europe, the National Skills Council will contribute to European cooperation and knowledge exchange in areas related to vocational excellence, talent development and emerging workforce needs. Importantly, this step also supports wider national efforts to continue strengthening the visibility, value, and prestige of vocational education and skills-based careers ensuring that technical talent is recognised not as an alternative pathway, but as a driver of innovation, opportunity, and economic growth.

This role aligns with the Council’s wider remit to strengthen skills intelligence, skills development, lifelong learning, and workforce preparedness in Malta.
